Learning From the Outside In

Capability starts at the threshold

The outsider, as a metaphor, has followed me for most of my life. I used to imagine myself standing outside a lit room, forehead against the glass, watching everyone else move with a fluency I never quite felt. I studied the choreography, understood the rhythms, yet stayed convinced that entry belonged to other people.

That belief became a quiet architecture. It shaped how I approached opportunity, learning, even joy. I underestimated my capacity because I confused unfamiliarity with impossibility.

Recently, that window cracked open in the gentlest way. Dance lessons. Habit streaks. A return to Spanish through Duolingo. Small, almost whimsical choices that hinted at larger truths. Then I made a decision that surprised even me.

I chose Chinese.

I chose it because it sits at the center of the world’s conversation. Technology, diplomacy, culture, design, commerce. Mandarin is not just a language. It is an orientation toward the future. I did not assume I could learn it. I treated it as something reserved for people who grew up closer to the window.

Then characters began to make sense. Tones stopped sounding like riddles. I recognized words, then phrases, then patterns. Something shifted. The impossible stopped being impossible. The glass dissolved.

The lesson was not linguistic. It was personal. We place artificial ceilings on ourselves and then live as if those ceilings were structural. We forget how quickly the mind renews itself when we give it a point of focus and a little room to surprise us.

Learning Chinese reminded me that capability is not a birthright. Capability is a choice. Every day we decide whether to stay outside the window or walk through the door that has been waiting for us the entire time.

Next time we are in Shanghai and you need to order 热茶 or 咖啡, we are covered.
