Calibrated Generosity

Sunday reflection.

Blind generosity does not create gratitude. It creates entitlement.

When help removes effort and responsibility, it quietly steals something essential. It replaces participation with expectation, and growth with dependency.

Growth requires engagement. Even modest effort matters. Generosity that asks nothing teaches nothing. It can unintentionally communicate a lack of faith in someone’s capacity to rise.

Real generosity is calibrated. It supports without rescuing. It offers help without confiscating dignity. It leaves room for productive struggle, the kind that strengthens rather than weakens.

Sometimes restraint is the more humane choice. Not from hardness, but from trust. Trust that another person can meet themselves where growth actually begins.
