Borrowing From the Future
Living ahead of yourself
I caught myself furnishing a house I do not yet own, then worrying about the mortgage.
It is a familiar pattern, living a few steps ahead of myself. Occupying rooms that have not been built. Spending tomorrow’s certainty to soothe today’s unease.
Planning has its place. Preparation is healthy. Living somewhere you have not arrived yet is something else entirely.
When the future is treated like a guarantee, the present becomes a holding pen. When expectations outpace reality, the bill always comes due now.
I noticed the habit early this time. That matters.
I am choosing to live where my feet are. I am choosing not to punish the present for the future’s uncertainty. Restraint is not deprivation. It is sovereignty.
Written from the present tense.
