Where pressure clarifies
The deep sea is closer than you think,
a dark bloom under the light-scattered hours,
waiting for your pulse to slow.
It speaks in the language of undertow,
the quiet pull of something honest
and unafraid to be vast.
Lean in.
Pressure reveals shape.
Silence reveals depth.
You return to the surface changed.

Reflection and Invitation
People are often surprised when they learn that I care as much about the deep sea as I do about the stars. My understanding of depth began with the ocean. I became a member of the Betty White Ocean Legacy Circle of the Monterey Bay Aquarium in 2000, and those decades shaped how I see complexity, resilience, and belonging.
The ocean teaches in ways that space cannot. It teaches patience under pressure and honesty in darkness. It teaches the value of listening before acting. These lessons matter because humanity will never navigate the cold distance between worlds until we learn what the sea has already shown us here at home.
This is where the invitation rises. Engage the deep in your own life. Step closer to the things that feel immense. Stand still long enough to hear what moves beneath the surface. Let pressure reveal your shape rather than distort it. Let silence become information instead of fear. The ocean thrives because it learns from its own conditions. You can do the same.
The deep sea is closer than you think.
So is the part of you that reaches farther than you ever imagined.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium invited me to share a brief reflection on why I support their work, and I welcomed the chance to speak to something core to who I am. Stewardship of our planet, especially our oceans, shapes my choices in life and in leadership. The sea teaches clarity, patience, and responsibility. I carry those lessons into my work as a designer and civic technologist, where I strive to build systems that honor interdependence. Supporting the Monterey Bay Aquarium feels less like philanthropy and more like citizenship, a commitment to the world we hope future generations inherit.
